Visiting Ironbridge

Some iconic images in life  can almost become  too familiar with the passing of time especially when viewed in books or on Television. But a trip to Ironbridge confirmed to me what an important and wonderful feat of engineering the Bridge actually is. Believed to be the first bridge in the world to be built entirely of cast iron, only made feasible by the use of a local blast furnace that enabled the bridge to be constructed at a much lower cost than previously thought possible. Being the first of its kind the joints and construction methods belong to the world of carpentry, utilising mortise and tenon and dovetail joints. Ironbridge and the surounding area make a splendid day or even days  out while exploring the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.   http://www.visitironbridge.co.uk/
